Mental health is rarely just about one thing.
Depression, anxiety, chronic stress, trauma, burnout, sleep difficulties and emotional distress can affect—and be affected by—many aspects of your health. Nutrition, sleep, hormones, physical health, medications, life circumstances, relationships and past experiences can all play a role in how we feel and function.
At The Junction Naturopathic, Dr. Rick Bhim, ND takes an integrative approach to mental health that considers the whole person—not simply the symptoms.
With training in both conventional medicine and naturopathic medicine, hospital experience, clinical residency training and ongoing education in mental health, Dr. Bhim works with patients who are looking for a thoughtful, evidence-informed approach to their mental and emotional wellbeing.
If you feel like something isn't right, but you don't feel that the answer is simply another prescription or that you need to figure it out on your own, integrative care may be right for you.
Mental health concerns can also occur alongside physical symptoms such as fatigue, digestive problems, hormonal changes, headaches, pain or other chronic health concerns. Looking at these connections can sometimes provide important additional information when developing a treatment plan.
Dr. Bhim works with adults experiencing a range of mental and emotional health concerns, including:
Conventional Medical Training + Naturopathic Medicine
Dr. Bhim completed a conventional medical degree before returning to Toronto to pursue naturopathic medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine.
This gives him a perspective that is relatively uncommon in naturopathic practice: an understanding of conventional medical assessment and treatment alongside the broader, whole-person approach of naturopathic medicine.
His goal is not to choose between conventional and natural medicine.
It is to understand when each approach may have a role—and how they can work together safely and appropriately.

Dr. Bhim's interest in mental health is grounded in clinical experience rather than simply an interest in the subject.
During his medical training and hospital experience in Chicago, he worked in emergency settings where he encountered patients presenting with significant mental-health concerns requiring assessment, triage and appropriate medical care.
He also completed a clinical rotation focused on mental health, gaining experience supporting individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, substance-use concerns and addiction.
These experiences provided an important foundation for understanding mental health from both a medical and human perspective.
Dr. Bhim continues to be involved in clinical education at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, where he teaches and supervises naturopathic medical students.
His involvement includes teaching in the area of mental health, allowing him to remain engaged with current clinical thinking while helping future naturopathic doctors develop their understanding of mental and emotional health.
His broader clinical education at CCNM includes experience as a Clinical Resident and subsequent residency training at the CCNM Integrative Cancer Centre.
At your first appointment, the goal is to understand the bigger picture.
Depending on your concerns, this may include discussing:
Mental and emotional health
Physical health
Lifestyle and environment
The goal is not to reduce mental health to nutrition, supplements or one particular cause.
Instead, we look at the different factors that may be contributing to your experience and determine where naturopathic care may appropriately fit within your overall healthcare.
Integrative care does not mean replacing conventional medical care.
Many patients already work with a family physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist or other healthcare professional. Naturopathic care can sometimes complement that care by addressing additional aspects of health and wellbeing.
Dr. Bhim's conventional medical background allows him to communicate comfortably within a broader healthcare system and understand the importance of coordinating care when multiple healthcare providers are involved.
The goal is to build a healthcare team that works together—not to create another silo.
Your treatment plan is individualized and depends on your symptoms, health history, goals and existing medical care.
Depending on the situation, naturopathic care may include:
Any natural health products or supplements are considered in the context of your medications, medical history and individual circumstances.
Seeking help with your mental health doesn't mean that something is wrong with you.
Sometimes you know you're not feeling like yourself. You may be functioning at work but struggling when you get home. You may be exhausted from constantly feeling anxious. You may have been dealing with low mood for longer than you'd like to admit. Or perhaps you've been through something difficult and don't feel like you've fully recovered.
You don't need to have everything figured out before asking for help.
An integrative approach can provide another perspective and another member of your healthcare team to help you move forward.
Naturopathic care can complement mental-health treatment, but it is not a replacement for emergency or psychiatric care when someone is experiencing a mental-health crisis.
If you are experiencing an immediate mental-health emergency, thoughts of suicide or self-harm, severe confusion, psychosis, or another situation requiring urgent assessment, seek emergency medical care.
For ongoing concerns, Dr. Bhim can work alongside your existing healthcare providers and, when appropriate, help determine whether additional mental-health support or referral is warranted.
